MySpace Promotion

Tips on How to Effectively Promote Your Music Using MySpace

MySpace promotion is a key ingredient in getting noticed and building up a fan base.  This far into the game, most people who are going to be on MySpace already are on MySpace.  While the site grows larger and larger everyday, there are few people out there who can honestly say that they do not know what MySpace is, and what it is all about. One thing that people may not know, however, is that MySpace is about more than making friends and finding a mate—it is also about networking and business.  If you are an aspiring singer or musician, MySpace promotion just may be the big break that you have been waiting for.

Encourage Fan Feedback

In order to get the most out of your MySpace page, you have to put your best face forward.  This means finding songs to post in your music player that people will be able to relate to, and that will get them to appreciate your musicianship.  Usually your best tracks work great, and the more it sounds like things that could be heard on the radio the better.  MySpace allows users to comment on both your profile and your songs, so encourage feedback and let the fans know that you appreciate it.  It's all about MySpace promotion.

Go With Those Who Know

When you are adding friends to your MySpace page, you want to make sure that you are adding people who will appreciate what you have to offer.  If you have an R&B album coming out, hard rock and heavy metal lovers are probably not the type of people whose MySpace friendship you want to request.  Look for people whose musical interests are aligned with your goals as a musician, as it is those people that are going to become your biggest fans in the future.

A great way to find MySpace friends that can relate to your music is to find the fans of other musicians of your same genre.  If your music is along the same wavelength as the other bands whose friends you are checking out, you shouldn't have a problem acquiring at least some of these friends for your own.  Friends are great to have because they are the beginning of your fan base and will tell others about your profile and your music if they are pleased.  When done correctly, a MySpace promotion page will add friends very quickly and your fan base will grow.

Be a Good MySpace Friend

If you want your friends to pay attention to you and give some traffic to your profile and tell their friends about you, you have to be a good MySpace friend.  What does this mean? It is just as simple as keeping in touch; responding to comments and messages goes a long way.  Post pictures of your everyday life so that people can see that you are a real person.  They will relate better to you this way.  Now, MySpace has things set up to where you can have as many pictures and albums as you could ever want to post, so you have the freedom to organize your pictures in whatever way you find most appropriate and allow your fans and friends to see the 'real you.'

The worst thing that you can do is be one of those people who never respond to their fans' communications.  That is an awful thing to do, and a surefire way to get deleted off of several friends lists quick, fast, and in a hurry.  If they think it is somebody other than the real you managing your MySpace, that may also discourage them so be sure to tell them that it really is you, and if you get a lot of messages and don't have time to respond to them all, be kind and post a bulletin or a note on your profile and let them know.  If this is the case, most fans will understand but if you don't let them know, they are likely to think that you are a snob and not give you the attention that you need and deserve.

Also, when you do have people accept your add requests or request that you add them as a friend, be sure to drop them a comment thanking them for their friendship.  You can also take that time to invite them to listen to your music and perhaps even pass it along to their friends if they like what they hear.  Remember...when staying in touch with your friends, keep your MySpace promotion page upfront, close and personable and frequently update your page with current information which you believe would be of interest to them.

Make Use of the Blog Function

MySpace blogs are a great way to keep your fans posted with what you are doing.  For example, if you are having a show at a local bar in your community or you happen to have a new album coming out and want to let people in on it, you can post a blog.  If you invite people to subscribe to your blog, they will get a notification every time you post a new one, making it easier to stay up on things as you post them.

Another great use for the MySpace blog feature is that you can post the progress of any projects that you have going on;  the status of your album, a video, a web site that you may be building — whatever.  Invite them to comment and build community this way.  If your fans feel like they can relate, they will love you just that much more.

MySpace promotion with a MySpace profile is probably not going to be the easiest method of promotion that you have ever encountered, but it may very well be one of the most effective.  In case you have not yet noticed, just about everybody is on MySpace or knows somebody who has a MySpace profile, so that is more exposure than you may be able to get through any other methods.  Harness the power of MySpace while you still can, as it may not always be there.  And remember…put your best face forward—you never know who may be looking and listening!
