I have done the pay-to-play/selling tickets deal two times before so my band could play a few of the bigger named venues. Never again. Stacked bills with a dozen bands playing. Some greedy promoters who do not care about you or your music, just how many tickets you sold.
I think everyone looking to gig/promote themeselves should look for as many alternate types of venues as possible - fairs, parks, college campuses just to name a few. If it's pay-to-play just so 'no way!'
