I would never pay to play! This is a business and thats whats really happening. You need to provide entertainment that will draw or keep people in the club drinking, eating (spending money) enough to cover the band. One suggestion I use which really works talk to the owner, manager etc like a business man. Explain you understand the dynamics of hiring your group and agree to start out at a lower rate with incrimental growth as you begin to draw fans. It takes at least 3-4 appearances to get a fan base in a specific club. Word of mouth etc will help.
