Band PA Systems
& Stage Lighting Systems

OK, you may think I'm a little crazy...but I believe the use of Band PA Systems and Stage Lighting Systems have become a lost art at the club level. What ever happened to “stacks” of PA speakers? It would seem now days that a speaker mounted to the top of a tripod is considered a band PA System. When it comes to lighting…forget it. Stage Lighting Systems for the most part have become absent from use in live performances.

I believe this is a step in the wrong direction when it comes to making an impression, sounding good and looking good. You should consider that any live show you perform is your time to shine. Not only to impress your fans…but what about the record label representative scouting for the next big act. If you’re unable to deliver a great first impression, it is doubtful he or she will return. You never know who may be a part of your audience.

Now is the time with so much competition out there…when it becomes even more important than ever for musicians and bands to focus on sounding good and looking good in an effort to present themselves as professionals. You need to stand out from the rest, and a bigger than life production can set you apart, especially when playing in the larger venues and clubs. Sizable band PA systems and stage lighting systems can really make the difference in getting recognized. If your just getting started, here are some suggestions for putting together a Basic PA System.

There may be times when additional gear is needed. There may be times when you just need to have an engineer come in and operate the system. An experienced engineer may even be able to identify flaws that you’re unaware of to achieve a better sound or look. Most production companies will be able to recommend systems for your particular needs. Band PA systems and stage lighting systems can usually be rented or leased. Production companies can even provide personnel to match any specific requirements you may have. An experienced sound or lighting engineer can make the difference between a great performance and a poor one…driving fans away or creating new ones. If you neglect the way you sound or look when you’re performing live, than you are making a crucial mistake.

Club sound systems and stage lighting systems may also be “in house”. If this is the case, you only need to provide your own personal equipment. Some clubs or venues may even employ engineers who are hired to come in and run band PA systems or lighting equipment for live entertainment. Always check ahead of time no matter where you’re playing to see if any sound or lighting gear is provided or whether they have engineers or personnel to help out with the performance.

The way your carry yourself on stage can be just as important as the sound and lights.

Video production is another aspect to consider and becomes even more important as you become recognized and established. A video/DVD of your performance can be a valuable asset to have when shopping for a record deal, auditioning for an opening act, or in auditioning to play a high-paying gig. A video/DVD of your performances can also be used for the purpose of reviewing for improvements. “Video Captures Essence.”

Music Cleveland has put together a Local Listing of Production Companies for Sound, Lighting, and Video. This is by no means a complete listing but any of these companies should be able to assist in answering any questions you may have in regards to their particular specialty.
