I've been playing for 40 years. In that time I've done a couple benifits for good causes. They were NOT at bars. I think I was about 17 and did a battle that was at a high school. To play for free at a bar is bordering on ludacris. Who pays for the gas, wear and tear on equipment, my time? I've been in a band or two where guys just like to get together and play music and drink beer. If they pick up a show that's cool if not, lets just jam in the basement. Needless to say I didn't stay with them long. I like to play but I'm not desperate to play for free or even have to sell tickets. Quite a few bars will take you for what they can get. Time to move on. There are plenty of places to play where you get your dues. All you have to do is look.
